چکیده

The potential use of carbon fibre laminate composites is limited by the weak out-ofplane properties, especially delamination resistance. The effect of incorporating titanium carbide to the mesophase pitch matrix precursor of carbon fibre laminate composites on interlaminar shear strength is studied both on carbonised and graphitised composites. The presence of titanium carbide modifies the optical texture of the matrix from domains to mosaics in those parts with higher concentrations and it contributes to an increase of fibre/matrix bonding. This fact produces an increase of the interlaminar shear strength of the material and changes the fracture mode.

Mechanical and Impact Properties of Untreated Jute Fabric Reinforced Polyester Laminates Compared with Different E- Glass Fibre Reinforced Laminates

In recent years, the improvement of properties of natural fibre reinforced laminates over the pure polymeric matrix has been thoroughly investigated with the aim of providing a possible replacement of E-glass fibre reinforced composites for some large-volume applications. In the present study, the properties of a jute/polyester laminate are compared with those yielded by two E-glass fibre woven...

Influence of fibre-matrix interface on the fracture behaviour of carbon-carbon composites

This paper studies the fracture behaviour of unidirectional carbon fibre reinforced carbon matrix composites and its relation with the type of fibre-matrix interface developed in the composite. Model unidirectional carbon-carbon composites were prepared using the same type of fibre and different pitches as matrix precursors. These included both commercial pitches and synthesized in the laborato...

Load Introduction in Carbon Fibre Composites for Automotive Applications

The introduction of carbon-fibre reinforced plastics in load bearing automotive structures provides a great potential to reduce vehicle weight and fuel consumption. A reduction in overall manufacturing cost can be realised through part integration and use of cost-effective materials such as heavy tow carbon fibre. There is a current drive within the automotive industry to develop the technologi...

Numerical and Experimental Studies on the Fracture Behavior of Rubber-toughened Epoxy in Bulk Specimen and Laminated Composites

(2002) Numerical and experimental studies on the fracture behavior of rubber-toughened epoxy in bulk specimen and laminated composites. ABSTRACT To study the toughening mechanisms of liquid rubber (LR) and core-shell rubber (CSR) in bulk epoxy and composite laminate, experimental and numerical investigations were carried out on compact tension (CT) and double-cantilever-beam (DCB) specimens und...

Long-term testing of composite through-thickness properties

The use of composite materials offshore has increased over the last years. Long term performance of a component is an important consideration for users and authorities when evaluating a composite solution. Long term data of composites are widely available for many material combinations. Data in sea water environment are more difficult to find. However, most of the available long-term data is re...
